Where does my money actually go?

Money goes somewhere. Let's find out where.

You get paid. A few weeks later, it's gone. And if someone asked "where did it go?" you might not have a clear answer.

That's normal. Money slips away in tiny pieces. The trick isn't to track every penny or feel bad about a coffee. It's to have a simple map.

The 50/30/20 idea is that map. Three buckets, easy to remember, no spreadsheet required.

Start with one number

Forget your full paycheck for a second. The number that matters is your take-home pay, the money that actually lands in your bank account after taxes come out.

That's the pie you're slicing. Find that number, and the rest is easy.

The three buckets

The idea splits your take-home pay into three parts.

50%: Needs. The stuff you truly can't skip. Rent. Groceries. Power and water. Your phone. Gas or bus fare to get to work. Minimum debt payments. If your life would fall apart without it, it's a need.

30%: Wants. The fun stuff. Eating out. Streaming. Shoes you don't need but really want. A night out with friends. This bucket is not a crime. You're allowed to enjoy your money, that's kind of the point.

20%: Future you. Money you send forward in time. Savings. An emergency fund. Extra payments on debt to kill it faster. This bucket is small but mighty. It's how you stop living paycheck to paycheck.

Fifty, thirty, twenty. Needs, wants, future.

See it with real numbers

Say your take-home pay is $3,000 a month. Here's the split:

  • Needs: $1,500
  • Wants: $900
  • Future you: $600

Now "where does my money go?" has an answer before the month even starts. You're not guessing anymore. You're aiming.

It's a guide, not a rulebook

Here's the part most money advice forgets to say: these numbers aren't sacred.

Live somewhere expensive? Your needs might eat 60%, and that's okay, you just trim wants a little. Trying to crush debt fast? Push your future bucket up to 30% for a while. The split bends to fit your life.

The point isn't to hit the numbers perfectly. It's to know roughly where your money flows so you can steer it on purpose.

Check yourself in 10 minutes

Want to know your real split right now? Do this:

  1. Open last month's bank or card statement.
  2. Go down the list and tag each thing: need, want, or future.
  3. Add up each group.

That's it. You'll probably be surprised by one bucket, most people are. No judgment here. Now you just know, and knowing is the whole game.

Start today

  1. Find your take-home pay.
  2. Split it: 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% future you.
  3. Peek at last month and see where you really land.
  4. Nudge one bucket in the direction you want.

No lecture. No guilt. Just a simple map for money that used to vanish.
